Ex Extremis Salus
Medical research, innovation and expertise for austere environments — starting with altitude medicine. What we learn at the edge of human physiology comes back to the bedside: to how people function, recover and survive.
Michael Grinn, MD MPH, founded the group in late 2024 and leads its expedition research program — designing the protocols, leading the medical team in the field, and translating what the mountain teaches into perioperative and critical care practice. He is a member of The Explorers Club.
Altitude is a controlled extreme. Oxygen delivery, cardiovascular reserve and recovery can be studied as the body is pushed to the limit of its physiology.
Continuous monitoring with wearable sensors, and an AI platform built to turn expedition data into decisions in the field and beyond it.
The goal is impact at home: longevity, functionality and survival for patients in the operating room, the ICU and everyday life.
IRB-approved field studies conducted on major summits, with continuous physiological monitoring from base to peak.
An AI-enabled platform launched in 2026 to connect expedition teams, data and medical expertise.
Physician-led care on expedition, and real-world validation of more than ten wearable sensors and devices in austere conditions.
The Foundation also gives back to the communities it works in, with donated equipment and education for local providers.
The founding partners organize as a group in late 2024.
Pulse At The Peak is established as a company and runs its Kilimanjaro study: continuous medical monitoring over a seven-day ascent to 19,341 ft, in support of the UN International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation. Manuscript in preparation.
Pulse At The Peak becomes a 501(c)(3) foundation, and its AI platform for expedition medicine goes live.
An IRB-approved study on the highest peak in the Americas, 22,837 ft, in January 2027 — carrying an Explorers Club Flag.
Research collaborators, device partners, sponsors and in-kind equipment donors are welcome. Talk to Dr. Grinn directly, or learn more on the Foundation’s site.
